Colorado Hunting Regulations: What You Need to Know Before You Hunt

Colorado is home to some of the most diverse and carefully managed big game hunting opportunities in North America. At Elk Glade Outfitters, we prioritize ethical hunting, conservation, and full compliance with state laws to ensure a safe, successful, and sustainable experience for all our guests.

Colorado Hunting Regulations | Elk Glade Outfitters

Before you step into the field, take a moment to review the key regulations and policies that apply to your hunt.

General Requirements

  • A valid hunting license (specific to species and weapon type)
  • The correct tag for the animal and Game Management Unit (GMU)
  • Habitat Stamp (automatically added to most license purchases)
  • Hunter Education Certification if born on or after January 1, 1949

Hunters must carry their license and tag at all times and present it upon request to wildlife officers.

Species-Specific Regulations

Elk & Mule Deer

  • Harvest only within designated GMU, season, and weapon class
  • Antler restrictions apply (e.g., 4-point minimum in some bull elk units)
  • Tags must be attached immediately after harvest

Turkey

  • Different rules for spring and fall (e.g., visible beard required in spring)
  • Typically one bird per tag/season
  • No rifles allowed — only shotgun or archery equipment

Firearm & Archery Rules

  • Firearms and bows must meet minimum caliber or draw weight
  • Rifles must be centerfire and at least .24 caliber for big game
  • Scopes not allowed during muzzleloader season
  • Crossbows prohibited in archery-only seasons (unless medically permitted)

Hunting Area & Land Use

Elk Glade operates on private land with leased access. Public land regulations may differ. Hunters must:

  • Stay within property boundaries
  • Respect private property — no trespassing
  • Observe posted closures and restricted vehicle areas

Fair Chase & Ethical Practices

  • No baiting allowed
  • No drones or electronic calls unless permitted
  • Legal hunting hours: 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset
  • No hunting under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Tagging & Transport

  • Validate tag immediately after harvest
  • Tag must remain with carcass until processed
  • Out-of-state hunters may need CWD documentation for transport

Elk Glade provides assistance with field dressing, tagging, and transporting your game.

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)

Some GMUs may require mandatory CWD testing. Elk Glade guides will assist with sample collection if required. Learn more at Colorado Parks & Wildlife.
