Story angles

Five framings that have gotten coverage before.

A founding 1888 ranch, family-run since 1929

The Elk Glade ranch is one of the longest-operated working cattle ranches on the south slope of Pikes Peak. The Rathke Ranch was founded in 1888; Jim's family homesteaded the valley in 1929 and bought the Rathke place in 2001, joining the two into one operation.

A CPW grant for the largest wildlife corridor on the Front Range

Colorado Parks & Wildlife recognized Elk Glade with a grant for protecting the largest wildlife corridor between New Mexico and Wyoming on the Colorado Front Range — the roadless canyon country that the ranch's own road is the only way into.

Multi-program agritourism as a working-ranch survival model

Elk Glade operates as a working cattle ranch first, and as a guided-experience operation second. The diversified revenue mix — guided hunts, cattle drives, horseback rides, fly fishing, ranch stays, private events — is what allows the ranch to remain financially viable without the family selling out or subdividing. The model is increasingly relevant as Colorado Front Range ranch land faces development pressure.

Conservation through partnership

Elk Glade earned a Colorado Parks & Wildlife conservation grant and works alongside the Colorado Cattlemen's Agricultural Land Trust, the Western Landowners Alliance, and the Palmer Land Conservancy. The conservation work is integrated with the cattle and hunt operations — cattle grazing manages fuel loads and brush, conservation-grade fencing supports wildlife passage, and East Beaver Creek's cold flow is kept year-round.

Pikes Peak south slope — the uncontested geography

Elk Glade is the largest working cattle ranch and the only substantial guided-hunt operation on the south slope of Pikes Peak. The canyon country around the ranch is the largest wildlife corridor between New Mexico and Wyoming on the Colorado Front Range — a conservation value Colorado Parks & Wildlife recognized with a grant. The only road in is the one the ranch built.

For accuracy

How we’d like the brand referenced.

  • First reference:Elk Glade Outfitters & Ranch (Victor, Colorado).
  • Short form (after first reference): Elk Glade.
  • Three brand tiers when relevant: Elk Glade (umbrella), Elk Glade Outfitters (guided experiences and bookings), Elk Glade Ranch (the land, its grazing lease, and conservation).
  • Tagline:“Ride True. Live Free. Stay Wild.”
  • Location: the south slope of Pikes Peak (preferred) or Victor, Colorado (mailing).
  • Hunt unit: Colorado GMU 59 (Game Management Unit 59), limited entry.
  • Don’t use:“dude ranch” — we’re a working cattle ranch with guided programming; the dude ranch model is distinct from what we run.
