How it works

A shortlist, not a sales pitch.

The finder sorts Colorado’s elk units against the one thing that should drive the choice: what you actually want from the hunt. It uses CPW’s published success rates and each unit’s real character — over-the-counter or draw, public or private, trophy or opportunity — to hand you a focused starting list instead of a wall of 50 units. From there, tap any unit for the full profile, confirm the current-year draw odds with CPW, and you’re ready to apply.

Frequently asked

Unit-finder questions.

How do I choose a Colorado elk unit?

Start by deciding what matters most — a tag you can get this season, a shot at a trophy bull, a beginner-friendly hunt, or the most public land — because those goals point to very different units. The over-the-counter units get you hunting now but come crowded; the trophy units take many years of preference points; the accessible public-land units are the sweet spot for a first DIY hunt. Our unit finder shortlists units by your goal using CPW success rates; then verify the current draw odds with Colorado Parks and Wildlife before you apply.

Is this unit finder's data accurate?

The elk success rates come straight from CPW's published Colorado Elk Harvest Estimates (the most recent season, labeled on each unit page), and the public-land percentages are approximate. What the tool can't predict is the exact draw odds for your point total in a given year — those shift every season, so we deliberately keep that part qualitative and point you to CPW's draw recap to confirm. Treat the results as a smart starting shortlist, not a guarantee.

What if I only have a few preference points?

Then focus on the over-the-counter and easy-draw units — the tool's 'a tag I can get now' option. With zero to a few points you can realistically hunt several good Colorado units this season, especially the OTC rifle units (subject to Colorado's ongoing OTC changes). The trophy units, by contrast, generally need 15 to 25-plus nonresident points, so they're a long-term point-building goal rather than a this-year option.

Can Elk Glade help me pick a unit or get a tag?

Yes. We hunt GMU 59 on the south slope of Pikes Peak and know the Colorado draw landscape well. Tell us your point total and goals and we'll help you read the units against your real situation, talk through application strategy, and let you know what's open with us — including landowner-voucher paths that can bypass the draw for our unit. The tool gives you the shortlist; we help you act on it.
