West Elk Wilderness, newly on the draw — Gunnison's OTC era ended in 2026, and the points line starts now.
About GMU 54
Colorado Game Management Unit 54 sits in the Gunnison Basin, spanning Gunnison county near Gunnison, Crested Butte, Almont, Crawford. The terrain runs from 7,500 – 12,000+ ft, with the primary big game being Rocky Mountain Elk, Mule Deer.
Vast and varied — steep alpine peaks and basins of the West Elk Wilderness drop through dark timber and aspen into rimrock canyons and ranch-edged drainages west of the Gunnison–Crested Butte corridor.

Tags & draw odds
Tag type: Limited draw — OTC bull removed for 2026.
NEW for 2026 — CPW removed the OTC 2nd/3rd-rifle bull license and made the whole unit limited draw. Because it is the first draw year, initial point requirements should be low (CPW set tag numbers near the recent OTC-use average) and will likely rise. Verify current-year odds with CPW.
Access & crowding
A mix of good Forest Service road access and big roadless Wilderness — the West Elk core is foot or horseback, while the margins have vehicle and ATV access.
Historically heavy under OTC; the 2026 switch to limited draw should thin the rifle crowds noticeably — one of the real upsides of the change.
Who GMU 54 is for
A big-country opportunity unit with a strong, well-distributed herd. Success is honest (22% all-manner), with the late rifle the standout. The new draw should improve hunt quality going forward.
In a line: The hunter who wants big public Gunnison-country elk and is willing to apply now that the OTC door has closed — ideally getting in early while points are cheap.
Recent changes: 2026: OTC bull (2nd & 3rd rifle) converted to limited draw; archery had already been limited since 2010. The entire Gunnison Basin (54/55/551) is now draw-only.
