Tags & draw odds

Tag type: Limited draw — OTC bull removed for 2026.

NEW for 2026 — OTC 2nd/3rd-rifle bull converted to limited draw, making the unit draw-only. First draw year, so expect low initial points that rise over time. Verify current-year odds with CPW.

Access & crowding

Good Forest Service access on the lower and mid-elevation roads off US 50 and the Taylor Canyon corridor, with roadless Wilderness high on Fossil Ridge.

Long one of the more crowded OTC rifle units; the 2026 draw conversion should ease that pressure.

Who GMU 55 is for

Big, high country with a sizable herd, but the rawest of the basin's success rates — the mid-rifle seasons are tough (the high late-rifle number comes off a small sample). An opportunity unit best hunted high and early, or very late.

In a line: The fit hunter who wants high Sawatch-flank public land and will apply now that OTC is gone — getting in while points are cheap.

Recent changes: 2026: OTC bull (2nd & 3rd rifle) converted to limited draw; archery limited since 2010. Whole Gunnison Basin now draw-only.
